Beer is a great match for food because of the complexity of its flavours, its ability to provide refreshment and to interact with many food flavours. If someone ordered a smoked ale with sticky toffee pudding, would that be so wrong? Well, it’s all about personal preference after all.

For hundreds of years, if you asked a restaurant server in any mid-range to upscale restaurant what drink to pair with a certain dish, the wine sommelier would be sent over. Wine always has its place beside any upscale cheese but what most people may not know is that beer is in fact one of the best matches for cheese as wine may cover up some of the flavours in cheese while carbonation in beer help enhance them.

“More and more foodies and beverage experts are learning that beer has an amazing capacity to pair with all kinds of foods. Nowadays, asking for a beer no longer means you’re simply afraid of wine,” says Cameron’s Brewmaster Jason Britton. “And here’s an interesting fact about hops; they are actually known to stimulate appetite so beer does its job already before the meal starts”, he adds.

Here are a few food pairing ideas to go along with your favorite dish.


Pair with: burgers; buffalo wings; Asian food; Mexican food; spicy food; nutty food; fried food; pizza; steaks; Cheddar, Parmesan, or Romano cheeses.


Pair with: Shellfish; light seafood; sushi; grilled pork and chicken; not-too-heavy pasta dishes (without cream or meat sauces); Southeast Asian food; Latin food; Mexican food; spicy food.

Red Ale

Pair with: bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, lamb dishes, roasted or grilled meats. Crème brûlée is the perfect pairing or vanilla cheesecake with a graham cracker crust.


Pair with: Salads, shellfish, fish, chicken, curries.
Cheese Pairing Ideas: Asiago, Colby, aged Chèvre, Fontina, Gorgonzola, Parmesan, Triple Crème.

Smoked Ale

Pair with: Grilled tomatoes, mushrooms asparagus and lightly grilled meats to complemented the smokiness without adding to it. Cheese pairing: Parmesan.

Barley Wine

Who needs port? Pair with: Stilton and walnuts. Rich, sweet desserts: chocolate hazelnut torte, toffee caramel cheesecake.

Strong Ale

Pair with: Big, intense dishes such as roast beef, lamb or game, grilled or roasted. Double Gloucester or other rich, moderately aged cheese. Spiced plum-walnut tart, classic cannoli, toffee apple crisp.

Dark Ale

Pair with: Hearty, spicy food: barbecue, sausages, roasted meat. Authentic Münster cheese. Pomegranate tart with walnuts, candied ginger pear cake.
